It is mainly picked in August and early September in deciduous or mixed forests, even in the boreal forest.
Fruit body
1-5 cm wide, 3-9 cm hight; without a clearly definite cap and steem ; tubular at first, becoming deeply funnel-shaped.
Cap
Upper/inner surface pale to dark grey, greyish to greyish brown base color.
Margin
Margin often black.
Hymenium surface
Under/outer surface smooth or very shallowly, dark grey becoming dull grey, darker near the base, blackish when bruised.
Stalk
It is often difficult to establish a demarcation between the fruiting surface and the base of the fruitbody.
Flesh
Thin and brittle, its flesh is blackish.
Comments 
This little blackish chanterelle is very popular with restaurateurs. Picks must be done early ; there is no gain in waiting because they will not grow and will not reach a large size. Craterellus fallax contain active vitamin B12.
