Using the guide

To identify a chanterelle you can visit the major groups identification key or, on the home page, move from one large group to another. If your mushroom does not match the first group, move on to the next group and so on until you come across the correct group. By clicking on this group you will reach the species page. Each group includes at most seven species; you can then easily identify the species by visiting the identification key found at the top of the page or by going directly to the descriptive page of each species.

On the page of each species you will find on the first line: frequency, edibility, approximate size and, by clicking on the compass, a map of the climatic zones where this species is present. By clicking on the photos of the various identification criteria, you will have access to a full screen image and, by clicking again, to move from one photo to another.

However, you should not believe that you will succeed in putting a precise name on each of your crops. Several mushrooms do not fit any known description; it may be a simple anomaly, a deformity, or even a species or subspecies not yet described.

Since the early 2000s, several scientific names have been modified, according to proposals from various authors. Considering that many of these names will have changed again over the next years, we are maintaining a more traditional approach at this level. However, we give the main names used in the scientific literature so that amateurs can find their way more easily.
