Habitat
Like C. olivaceus, it can be found in deciduous hardwood forests in regions further south.
Fruit body
This rare chanterrelle is distinguished by its color in shades of gray-brown to gray-black and by the undulations of the margin of its cap.
Cap
1 to 2.5 cm in diameter, the color varies from mid grey-brown to dark grey or black.
Margin
Wavy-lobed margin.
Hymenium surface
The fertile surface is pale grey to ochre grey, smooth or only finely longitudinally wrinkled.
Stalk
1 to 4 cm hight by 1 to 4 mm thick. The grey pruinose stem tapers towards the base. Stems are often clustered and sometimes joined at their bases.
Flesh
The flesh is thin, flexible and colored like the cap.
