Habitat
Under pine trees, most abundant in the boreal forest. Often in the same habitat as matsutake in association with jack pines over 60 years old.
Cap
Hairless, smooth at first then scaly to cracked, greyish greyish-brown.
Margin
Thin, wavy.
Tubes
Round to angular, radially elongated, visible, 3 to 4 per mm, not very decurrent.
Pores and Pore Surface
White at first, becoming pinkish-brown when crushed.
Stalk
Equal to bulbous.
Stalk Feature
Smooth to finely scaly with dark scales on a grey background, colourless to the cap.
Flesh
Cream turning grey when cooked.
Comments 
Mushroom appreciated in Japan and formerly preserved in brine. It is a quality edible whose flesh becomes grey when cooked.
