It is found from July to September under hardwood deciduous trees, mainly in oak stands.
Fruit body
Robust, large fruitbodies with a very distinctive bulb.
Cap
Beige when young, whitish, greyish to brownish when ripe, adorned with small white velar flakes.
Margin
Lined at maturity.
Gills
Whitish with many truncated short gills.
Stalk
White, finely fibrillous.
Stalk Feature
Partial white veil. The main feature of this amanita is having a turtleneck-shaped volva at the top of the bulb.
Flesh
White.
Chemical reactions
No reaction with chemical reagents, except phenol which browns the surface of the flesh, cap and stipe.
