Habitat
Mainly on lawns in September. Also on the edge of the forest.
Cap
Cylindrical, decorated with scales may become brownish with age. The gills are attached to a ring at the base of the stipe, detaches from it and quickly becomes deliquescent. Gills adnate at first, then free, very crowed, white then pinkish, gray and finally blackish.
Stalk
White, equal, hollow, smooth, decorated with a ring near the base of the stipe.
Flesh
White, thin, very quickly deliquescent.
Unfit for human consumption
This mushroom does not keep for long, so buttons should be cooked or processed within a day or two of picking. Decay begins as soon as the edge of the cap detaches from the ring at the stem’s base, just above the bulb. Unlike other Inky Caps, they can be consumed with alcohol.
Comments
Everyone is familiar with this mushroom that grows on our lawns in the early autumn cold. It is both detested and appreciated. Lovers of perfect lawns hurry to mow it down, but this just spreads the spores to other parts of the yard. If the work is done by contractors, the spores travel to neighbours’ yards. The Shaggy Mane is prolific, but more suited to personal use than commercial use.
