Under oaks and hardwoods. In Quebec literature, we read: under conifers, including hemlock, white spruce, white pine and balsam fir. American literature say: under oaks and elms.
Cap
Color variable: cinnamon-brown, jellow-brown to reddish-orange, staining blue when bruised.
Margin
Even.
Tubes
Yellow, adnate, staining blue when cut.
Pores and Pore Surface
Pore surface red, red-brown, red-orange, rapidly staining blue when bruised; pores circular to angular, 2 per mm.
Stalk
Equal or tapered in both directions.
Stalk Feature
Non-reticulated stalk, finely velvety at the base in age, reddish-orange colour, turning more red with age, typically yellow at the apex.
Flesh
Total, rapid colour change to blue when cut.
Basal Mycelium
White.
Comments 
May cause digestive disorders or poisoning for some people, even if it is rare. For this reason, several authors classify it in the category of «toxic mushrooms».
