LATE OYSTER

Panellus serotinus
Frequency
Frequent
Medium
Size
Habitat
In autumn (October). On many hardwood trees.
Cap
Greenish, from pale gray to dark, to bluish.
Margin
Inrolled at first and then spread out.
Gills
White at first, later browning; close, dividing frequently towards the margin.
Stalk
Lateral pseudostem.
Flesh
White, thick.
Unfit for human consumption
When the flesh turns into water through intense gels or when the fruitbodies are aged on the trunks as illustrated here, they are unfit for human consumption.
Comments
It has great resistance to frost: even if the caps freeze at night, they resume growth when the sun warms the undergrowth. This freeze-thaw cycle can be repeated several times. In winter, quality frozen fruit bodies can be picked from the trees.
