Hemlock varnish shelf

Ganoderma tsugae

Medium to big
Size
Habitat
On dead or live coniferous wood, usually on hemlock, rarely on other coniferous trees.
Cap
Lacquered, varnished and shiny surface, largely zoned and bumpy, covered with a layer of brown powder when at maturyty.
Margin
Margin white when growing, then yellow-orange and reddish-brown at maturity.
Tubes
Round to angular, 5-6 per mm. Brown tubes when cut.
Pores and Pore Surface
Whitish to cream at first, browning when bruised.
Stalk
Short or well-developed, lateral. Concolorous to the cap. Lacquered, smooth to bumpy, reddish-brown, mahogany to almost black
Flesh
White flesh spotted or zoned pale tawny to greyish-brown, with a darker area near the tube layer. Flesh of the stem concolorous and continuous with that of the cap. In very old specimens, the flesh becomes pale brown.
Comments 
In the literature, the number of tubes per mm is no longer a criterion for distinguishing Ganoderma sessile from Ganoderma tsugae.
