In the boreal forest, in association with black spruce, this mushroom can grow in great abundance. Further south, it is found more frequently in the company of the Balsam Fir.
Cap
Brownish, widely mammallized, wrinkled, often powdery and whitish in the center.
Margin
Even.
Gills
Adnate and broad, pale brown at first, darker thereafter.
Stalk
Equal, enlarged at the base, whitish to brownish.
Stalk Feature
A movable ring adorns its stipe.
Flesh
Whitish to greyish.
Unfit for human consumption
Fruitbodies should be picked young at the bud stage. As soon as the caps are opened, the fruitbodies have lost much of their quality.
Comments 
These fruitbodies have a short lifespan, which disqualifies them for the fresh market. They can be preserved for three days in the refrigerator.
