In autumn, on sandy soil in pine forests; accompanies matsutake in jack pine stands in the boreal forest where it abounds.

Olive to brownish yellow, with brownish scales in the center when ripe.

Adnate to free, crowdy, pale yellow to bright yellow.
Stalk
Equal,, slightly bulbous at the base.
Smooth, sometimes fibrillous, white to pale yellow.
Flesh
White.

There is no consensus regarding the edibility of the canary trich; it is considered toxic in some countries and excellent edible elsewhere. In the cases reported, the undesirable effects appear 24 to 72 hours after consuming it. Consume with care.
