Identifying Your Polypores
Habitat
On many deciduous trees and mainly on oaks. At or near the base of trees.
Cap
Red to blood-red cap, spongy, exuding a reddish liquid, covered with small asperities, sticky in wet weather.
Margin
Rounded, concolor with the cap.
Tubes
Pores round, hardly visible, 4 to 6 per mm.
Pores and Pore Surface
Fruiting surface decurrent, whitish, becoming brown when bruised; dull brown with age.
Stalk
Short, lateral, reddish at first becoming blackish towards the base; sometimes almost sessile.
Flesh
Soft, reddish flesh, exuding a blood-red liquid when cut, zoned with pale to dark bands.
