Fruiting in the presence of deciduous hardwoods, while the King Bolete prefer conifers. We can also find this mushroom with Hemlock and White Pine.
Cap
Red brown to tan, with sometimes reddish tints.

Pores and Pore Surface
White, olivaceous in age, immutable; pores circular and small.
Stalk
Stalk enlarging toward the base, generally dark in colour.
Stalk Feature
Entirely covered with a white reticulum.
Flesh
White, immutable.
Basal Mycelium
White.
Chemical reactions
FLESH: no reaction, except towards gray with FeSO4. CAP: no reaction, except towards gray with FeSO4. TUBES: towards brown with KOH and NaOH and light brown with NH4OH; to gray with FeSO4 and NH4OH; no change with formalin.
Comments 
Since 2019, several authors consider the Club-footed Bolete as a simple variety of the King Bolete and is no longer considered a species in its own right. However, chemical tests show differences.
