Habitat Area
In mixed pine and hardwood deciduous forests.
Cap
Dull brick-red to reddish brown with an olive tint, cracked in age.
Margin
Even, sometimes lobed or irregular at maturity.
Tubes
Adnate, depressed near the stalk.
Pores and Pore Surface
Pore surface dingy yellow, immutable or staining cinnamon-red when bruised or in age; pores circular to angular, 1-3 per mm.
Stalk
Whitish to yellowish or reddish, tapered downward.
Stalk Feature
Strongly reticulated on the upper part or all over the stalk.
Flesh
Immutable or staining reddish-purple, sometimes yellow above the tubes when cut.
Basal Mycelium
Pale yellow.
Chemical reactions
FLESH: pale beige with KOH and NaOH; bluish gray with FeSO4 and formalin; gray with phenol; no change with NH4OH.
CAP-STIPE: beige with KOH, NaOH and NH4OH; grayish with FeSO4 and phenol; no change with formalin.
