Habitat
Mountainous terrain; mixed forest, coniferous and hardwoods with beech, oak and lime trees.
Fruit body
Fruitbody stocky, solid, with thick flesh, 6.5 cm high by 9 cm wide.
Cap
Brownish, cracked, white in the cracks towards the center and yellow towards the margin. 9cm wide.
Margin
Even.
Tubes
Short, olive-yellow.
Pores and Pore Surface
Pores surface olive-yellow, large and irregularly shaped pores.
Stalk
Short, wide and full, 4cm high X 2cm wide.
Stalk Feature
Stipe surface grainy, red, paler at the base.
Flesh
White flesh in the cap and yellow going down into the stipe. The flesh of the cap turns yellow slowly when cut and reddens mainly under the cuticle; the flesh of the stipe reddens in places. The flesh is yellow in the galleries dug by insects.
